Malevisi is a municipality to the west-southwest of Heraklion. This program features several highlights of the region. It starts at the Gazi Archeological Museum that displays a new collection of local artifacts. Following the old road of Crete, we will then arrive and hike (about 2 kms) the Almyros Gorge (the only gorge on Crete with seven names) with its alluring array of the ruins of three chapels and a monastery, waterfalls, geological formations, trees (including the largest wood of holly on the island), and wild flowers. We will then drive to Kamariotis to explore the village and enjoy lunch at a local tavern. The old village of Kamaraki is our last stop; there we will explore the Cave of Hainospilios

(that the locals call ‘the Labyrinth’) that archaeological evidence dates to pre-Minoan times. The cave served as a refuge haven during the Ottoman times and a center of resistance during the German occupation of the island.
